Communication with unseen spiritual energy / beings is not by any means a new concept. It is something that has been used as a natural form of communication between two worlds throughout the sands of time. You only need to look through the bible - old and new testaments to see early examples of mediumistic communication, for example, prophets such as Moses and Joseph and, of course Jesus, the Nazarene, as well as his disciples.
There are also many other examples of Spirit communication throughout history which have been experienced and documented by people from all walks of life, age groups and cultures. It is certainly not a new phenomena, although now it has become more widely accepted and covered both positively and negatively through the media.
For somebody who began on this pathway as one of the most skeptical of people known to man, I would always encourage healthy skepticism and questioning, as long as you are not hurting or insulting anyone to put your beliefs across. Mediumship, both receiving messages and giving them, is a very personal experience for all concerned and I firmly believe it is something you need to feel and understand for yourself before you can make any judgements.
What is Mediumistic (Spirit) Energy?
Whereas psychic energy belongs to those of us living in the physical world, mediumistic energy comes from the excarnate spirit / soul / being of someone who has passed away to the higher life. Often you will hear of people receiving messages and guidance from loved ones, friends and even pets from 'beyond the grave'. Mediums often refer to these beings as 'Spirit people', 'Spirit communicators', 'Spirit beings' or just 'Spirit'.
One fascinating fact that you may or may not be aware of is that the auric energy containing all of our life 'data' stays with us when we pass over. This includes our memories, personality, knowledge and the essence of who we are. It is only the physical body that dies, but the rest of us, our 'spirit selves', continue to thrive and grow infinitum! Wow, this means that if you are like me, this will be both exciting and intriguing news to you (that is if you did not already know or suspect this). The main reason why this such a wonderful concept is because the possibilities of communicating or 'staying in touch' with our loved ones, even after their passing, is endless!! We do not have to be parted from them after all! Well.....that is, they are obviously not with us in the same physical form, but the actual essence and person we know are still around us, isn't that phenomenal! Anyway, the point is that when Mediums say they are giving a 'mediumistic reading / sitting' or giving proof of survival in a public demonstration, it is this energy that they should be accessing / communicating with.
How Do I Tell the Difference Between Psychic and Mediumistic Energies?
The two types of energies, in themselves can be explained fairly simply, it becomes a little more complicated when describing how, as a Medium, you can tell the difference between the two types of phenomena, when you are actually working with them both. This is because it is usually a very personal and individual experience that only commitment and dedication to development can highlight. It is not often that someone can say they are able to distinguish these identifying factors instantly and in exactly the same way as other do.
To give you some points from my own experiences as a Medium and Spiritual Teacher, regarding being able to distinguish some of the differences:
- Psychic connections are often more 'bitty' or disjointed. They tend to focus more on information about the sitters own past and present life experiences, their thoughts, feelings and aspirations.
- Mediumship is communication with other specific spirit beings. It is being able to make a connection to higher vibrations than our own and bring through proof of survival from loved ones who have passed away.
- Working psychically often requires much more use of your own energy because it involves working with your own 'higher self' to connect to and interpret the information you receive. This is often reported to feel more 'heavy' and 'draining'.
- Mediumship should feel quite different if the Medium has a good connection with their Spirit communicator. For example, the energy is often described as 'lighter' and the flow of information coming through tends to be much clearer and stronger and often there may be feelings of extreme hot or cold sensations. It is also possible to have a conversation with 'Spirit' and ask them questions which they can give answers to. This is because you are communicating with a 'live' intelligent mind, not just a person's energy field.
All of the above experiences and sensations are by no means exhaustive, there are likely to be many more personal differences experienced by people at various times. The reason I believe it is important to highlight that these differences exist, is that it will help those wanting to enhance their knowledge and skills when working with these amazing energies and if it is your intention to follow the path of Mediumship, it can only help to improve the professionalism you give to your work.
